Local football team supports food bank…

3rd April 2024

We were thrilled to welcome two brilliant football players to our food bank last week.

Aiden Marsh and Conor Grant, who currently play for Barnsley FC, visited our food bank to find out more about what we do and offer some help in the warehouse. The two lads were given a guided tour by Barnsley Foodbank Partnership Manager, Suzanne, much to the delight of grandson Billy who is a huge Reds fan! The two then got stuck in, picking and packing emergency food parcels for those experiencing crisis across Barnsley.

“It’s massively important that we help out in our local community,” said Conor. “Just coming down here with Marshy puts things into perspective and how lucky we are to do what we do. To come and help is really special.”

“Just walking around, you can see how friendly everybody is,” echoed Aiden. “We’ve had a chat with a few people and everyone is very welcoming. If you are in need, it’s a very good place to come. Credit to everyone here, it is eye-opening.”

Reds Against Hunger started in January, with students visiting the food bank on a monthly basis to donate some time and volunteer. Following on from the success of previous match collections, they are back and bigger than ever! On Saturday 13th April, there will be a collection for Barnsley Foodbank Partnership at the Barnsley FC home game against Reading. Fans are invited to bring non-perishable, ambient food (tins, packets, etc) and donate them at the dedicated collection point. The point will be open from 12:30pm until the match kick-off, with the food making its way directly to the Barnsley Foodbank Partnership hub the following Monday to be put directly into emergency food parcels.
